Jaigaon to Thimphu — What You Need to Know
Jaigaon and Phuentsholing are twin border towns — just 500 metres apart, separated by the Bhutan gate. From Phuentsholing, the mountain highway winds through the Chhukha district, climbing steeply through lush forests and dramatic gorges before descending into the Thimphu valley — the capital of Bhutan.
The total journey from Jaigaon to Thimphu is approximately 165 km and takes 4–5 hours including the border crossing at Phuentsholing. We strongly recommend starting by 8:00–9:00 AM so you clear immigration during peak office hours and arrive in Thimphu before nightfall.
Border Crossing at Phuentsholing
The Phuentsholing border gate is open daily, generally from 9 AM to 5 PM for permit processing. Indian nationals do not need a visa to enter Bhutan but must carry a valid Voter ID card or Passport. A free entry permit is issued at the immigration office just inside the gate.
For travel beyond Phuentsholing to Thimphu and other districts, a Route Permit is also required, obtained from the same immigration office. This process typically takes 30–60 minutes. Our driver and partner representative will assist you throughout.
Third-country nationals (non-Indian) require a Bhutan visa applied in advance through a TCB-licensed tour operator — our partner DmcBhutanTrips.com can arrange this.
