Important: Indian Taxis Cannot Enter Bhutan
As per the Royal Government of Bhutan (gov.bt) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bhutan (mfa.gov.bt), Indian-registered vehicles are not permitted to cross the Phuentsholing border gate or operate commercially inside Bhutan. This is a strict and non-negotiable regulation.

Bhutan Entry Permit — What You Must Know

Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)
The SDF is a mandatory government levy charged to all visitors staying overnight in Bhutan. As per the Tourism Council of Bhutan (bhutan.travel):

As confirmed by the Tourism Council of Bhutan and widely enforced across Bhutanese banks, hotels, and shops — Indian ₹2,000 denomination notes are not accepted anywhere in Bhutan. Carry ₹500 and ₹100 notes only. Exchange at Jaigaon or Phuentsholing before proceeding to Thimphu.
Per the Department of Immigration, Bhutan (doi.gov.bt):
- Office hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday
- Lunch break: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM — counters are closed
- Closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and Bhutanese public holidays
- Arrive before 12 noon to avoid afternoon queues during peak season
As of 23 April 2024, the Tourism Council of Bhutan (bhutan.travel) removed the mandatory travel insurance requirement for all visitors. Travel insurance is no longer a condition of entry. However, it is always advisable to carry personal medical insurance, especially for mountain travel.
